Maleficent (2014)

“Maleficent” (2014) is a dark fantasy film directed by Robert Stromberg and produced by Walt Disney Pictures. It is a reimagining of the classic 1959 Disney animated film “Sleeping Beauty,” told from the perspective of its iconic villain, Maleficent. The film stars Angelina Jolie as Maleficent, alongside Elle Fanning as Princess Aurora, Sharlto Copley as King Stefan, and Sam Riley as Diaval.

The story explores the untold history of Maleficent, a powerful fairy living in the magical Moors. Betrayed by the human King Stefan, who was once her childhood friend, Maleficent turns vengeful and casts a curse on his newborn daughter, Aurora, condemning her to fall into a death-like sleep on her sixteenth birthday. However, as Aurora grows, Maleficent finds herself forming an unexpected bond with the young princess, leading her to question her own actions and the true nature of good and evil.

“Maleficent” delves into themes of betrayal, revenge, and redemption, providing a complex and sympathetic portrayal of its titular character. The film is praised for its stunning visual effects, imaginative world-building, and Angelina Jolie’s captivating performance. It offers a fresh and nuanced take on a well-known fairy tale, presenting a story of love and forgiveness that challenges traditional notions of villainy.

The success of “Maleficent” led to a sequel, “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil,” released in 2019, continuing the story of Maleficent and Aurora in the enchanting world of the Moors.
