Doctor Sleep (2019)

“Doctor Sleep” (2019), directed by Mike Flanagan, is a supernatural horror film based on Stephen King’s 2013 novel, which is a sequel to his 1977 novel “The Shining.” The movie serves as both a continuation of King’s story and a homage to Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 film adaptation of “The Shining.”

The story follows an adult Danny Torrance (Ewan McGregor), who is still haunted by the traumatic events he experienced as a child at the Overlook Hotel. Struggling with alcoholism, Danny eventually settles in a small town in New Hampshire and finds a semblance of peace while working at a hospice, where he uses his psychic abilities, known as “the shining,” to comfort dying patients. This earns him the nickname “Doctor Sleep.”

Danny’s life takes a dramatic turn when he forms a telepathic connection with a young girl named Abra Stone (Kyliegh Curran), who possesses a powerful version of the shining. Abra seeks Danny’s help to combat a sinister cult known as the True Knot, led by the ruthless Rose the Hat (Rebecca Ferguson). The True Knot members feed on the “steam” produced by torturing and killing children with the shining, in their quest for immortality.

As Danny and Abra join forces, they embark on a perilous journey to stop the True Knot and confront their own fears. The battle leads them back to the Overlook Hotel, where Danny must face the ghosts of his past and tap into his inner strength to protect Abra and put an end to the terror. “Doctor Sleep” explores themes of trauma, recovery, and the battle between good and evil. Ewan McGregor delivers a compelling performance as Danny Torrance, capturing his character’s struggle with addiction and his journey toward redemption. Kyliegh Curran shines as Abra, portraying her character’s courage and determination. Rebecca Ferguson’s portrayal of Rose the Hat is both charismatic and menacing, adding depth to the film’s antagonist.

Directed by Mike Flanagan, known for his work on “The Haunting of Hill House” and “Gerald’s Game,” the film skillfully blends elements of psychological horror and supernatural thriller. Flanagan’s direction pays homage to Kubrick’s “The Shining” while also remaining faithful to King’s vision, creating a visually stunning and emotionally resonant experience.
“Doctor Sleep” (2019) received positive reviews for its performances, direction, and respectful continuation of the iconic story. It offers a satisfying and thrilling narrative that expands the universe of “The Shining,” providing closure for longtime fans while introducing new elements of horror and suspense.
