“Zulu” (1964)

“Zulu” (1964) is an iconic British war film directed by Cy Endfield, depicting the historic Battle of Rorke’s Drift during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. The film features a strong ensemble cast, including Stanley Baker as Lieutenant John Chard and Michael Caine in one of his breakout roles as Lieutenant Gonville Bromhead. Known for its grand scale, compelling performances, and sweeping cinematography, “Zulu” remains a classic in the war film genre.
The film is based on the true events of the Battle of Rorke’s Drift, where a small British garrison of 150 men successfully defended a mission station against an overwhelming Zulu force of over 4,000 warriors. The story begins with the aftermath of the British defeat at the Battle of Isandlwana, and the tension quickly escalates as news reaches Rorke’s Drift that the Zulus are on the march.
Lieutenant Chard, an engineer officer, finds himself unexpectedly in command due to his seniority over Lieutenant Bromhead, who is a career soldier. Despite their differences in background and temperament, the two must work together to prepare their defenses as the Zulus approach. What follows is a tense, desperate battle for survival as the British soldiers, many inexperienced, face wave after wave of ferocious Zulu attacks.
