“Full Metal Jacket,” directed by Stanley Kubrick, is a stark and harrowing exploration of the Vietnam War, divided into two distinct parts. The first half, set in a Marine Corps boot camp, is dominated by the fierce presence of R. Lee Ermey as the relentless Gunnery Sergeant Hartman, and the transformation of Private Pyle , played by Vincent D’Onofrio, goes from an incompetent rookie to a broken man.
The second half shifts to the war-torn streets of Vietnam, following Matthew Modine’s Joker as he faces the brutal realities of war.
