One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975) is a critically acclaimed drama directed by Miloลก Forman, based on Ken Kesey’s 1962 novel of the same name. The film is regarded as one of the greatest in cinematic history and is notable for its powerful performances, particularly from Jack Nicholson and Louise Fletcher. It won all five major Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Adapted Screenplay, a feat accomplished by only a few films.
The story is set in a psychiatric hospital and revolves around Randle Patrick “Mac” McMurphy (Jack Nicholson), a rebellious convict who fakes insanity to avoid hard labor in prison. He is transferred to a mental institution where he expects an easier life. However, he soon clashes with the institution’s strict and tyrannical head nurse, Nurse Ratched (Louise Fletcher), whose oppressive control over the patients drives much of the tension in the film.
As McMurphy interacts with the other patients, he begins to challenge the rigid and dehumanizing system within the hospital. He encourages the patients to assert their individuality and freedom, leading to both humorous and poignant moments. The conflict between McMurphy’s defiant spirit and Nurse Ratched’s authority escalates throughout the film, leading to a dramatic and heartbreaking conclusion.
